GMRS Reviews

GMRS Radio Reviews

While you can't test each GMRS radio brand and model to see how they perform under typical conditions, our reviews provide the results of our hands-on tests of the features you want and need.  We offer our opinions of which radios really deliver and which ones offer basic services.  We test the maximum ranges that typically are advertised to see if their claims are true.

Midland LXT300, LXT300VP3

Range

Criteria:  Flat land sending and receiving, suburb setting.

Clear

 1.5 miles

Faint/Static yet usable

1.5 miles

Signals lost

 2 miles

We don't hold GMRS radios to their advertised ranges.  Maximum ranges tend to be under ideal conditions i.e  on water, etc..  We prefer to hold radios to real-world, less than ideal conditions.  "GMRS Reviews" employs a benchmark of 20% of advertised ranges.  This means that a reviewed GMRS radio should be able to meet this typical use benchmark.

LXT300 (rated as 10 mile radio)

The LXT300 offered clear reception at 1.5 miles.  We lost reception at 2 miles.  The LXT-300 almost, but not quite, met our benchmark of 20% of advertised range.

Clarity

Very clear speaker.  Excellent volume range from super soft to quite loud.    We

were impressed with the clarity of transmission and just how loud this radio can get.  Ideal for noisy environments where maximum range isn't required.

The features of this radio include 22x38 channels (as is typical of GMRS radios now), Roger beep and VOX capabilities.  Call ringer selection and channel scan.  Super sturdy case, nice push to talk button (tactile feedback).  Easy to change settings with a click of the menu button. I guess you could use the low power option to save batteries when you're relatively close to each other, but my guess is people generally leave it on high anyway.  Scanning channels was a little slow to my liking, but it works fine.    The Vox feature works great in a relatively quiet environment, but that's about the only time you'd need this feature anyway.  It uses 4 AAA batteries which likely limits it's range of transmission.  It doesn't feel bulky on your belt.  Like the vibrate alert for use in noisy environments (like when using lawn mower, etc.).

Ergonomics

Ease of use, and general feel

With a somewhat pear shaped housing, the LXT-300fits surprisingly well in your hand. The PTT button is conveniently placed if not a tad on the small side.  Housing is made of sturdy plastic and should hold up very well.

Quality

Radio has a solid feel.  Case and buttons are manufactured from sturdy materials.  Is slightly heavier than some other radio.

Overall Impressions

The Midland LXT300 is an good choice in lower range GMRS radios.  I suspect the use of AAA batteries (or similarly powered rechargeable battery) instead of AA offers a smaller footprint, but may somewhat hamper it's range capabilities.   It's still a solid performer with a great set of features.
